Ocean Sounds

Real waves from four shores: a sandy beach in North Carolina, rocks in Chile, a pebble beach in the Canary Islands and a far-off shore in Turkey. Mix them and set a timer.

Ocean Sounds for Sleep

  1. Choose Ocean sounds for sleep. It sets slow, distant waves under gentle ones and turns the tone down.
  2. Set the timer to 60 minutes or 8 hours. The sea fades out over the last two minutes.
  3. Keep the volume low. Waves rise and fall, so set the level on a loud wave, not a quiet one.

Pick Your Shore

  • Gentle waves: small waves on sand, about one every eight seconds.
  • Distant waves: a slow, soft surf from far up the beach.
  • Waves on rocks: bigger waves breaking and pulling back.
  • Pebble beach: the rattle of stones rolled by each wave.

Where Each Shore Was Recorded

We cut each recording into a loop that joins up without a seam and balanced the volumes so the sliders match. Each loop starts at a random point, so a mix of several layers doesn't repeat in step.

FAQs

Do the waves loop?
Each shore is a recording between 78 and 92 seconds long, cut in the quiet moment between two waves so the join sounds like the next wave coming in. Layers start at random points, so a mix doesn't repeat in step.
Are these real ocean recordings?
Yes. Each shore was recorded outdoors by a sound recordist who shared it for anyone to use (CC0). The credits under the player say who recorded each one and where.
How much data does it use?
Each shore is 1 to 2 MB and downloads once per visit.
